Squash court dimensions and markings
Squash is played in a closed box of four walls. The ball can bounce off any wall, but the front wall is the one that matters: every shot must reach it. The lines show where the ball is in play and where it is out.
Court size
A standard singles court is 9.75 m long and 6.4 m wide. The back wall is usually glass so spectators can watch; on show courts all four walls can be glass.
Front wall lines
At the bottom of the front wall is the tin (the board), 48 cm high. A ball that hits the tin is a fault — it makes a distinctive dull sound.
The service line is at 1.78 m and only matters on the serve. The out line is at 4.57 m: anything above it (or on the line) is out.
Side and back wall lines
The side wall out line runs diagonally from 4.57 m at the front wall down to 2.13 m at the back wall. The back wall out line is at 2.13 m. Touching a line counts as out.
Floor markings
The short line crosses the court 5.44 m from the front wall. The half-court line runs from it to the back wall, splitting the back of the court into two quarters. The 1.6 × 1.6 m service boxes sit against the side walls at the short line.
Where the short line meets the half-court line is the “T” — the key position on court: from there every corner is closest.
Try it in the game
In the game the front wall view above the court shows the tin, service line and out line — every ball that hits the wall leaves a mark.
